Cocoa BeachGeographically Cocoa Beach is a barrier island that is barely a mile long and as little as 10 city blocks wide. It is surrounded by waterfront which is where is gets its natural beauty. The Atlantic Ocean is on the East and the Banana River is on the West. There is abundance of waterfront housing. The entire city is only six miles long. The beautiful ocean breezes and overall beauty of the area brings out the best in people. The area is known for its friendly and easy going atmosphere. Recreation is abundant in this small city where there is a public golf course that runs along the Banana River with greens that rival many private clubs. There are many city owned tennis courts and playground. A large public aquatic area houses an Olympic size pool, kids area, slides and diving boards. Cocoa Beach has been called "The Surfing Capital". People come from all over Florida to visit the pristine white beaches where there is plenty of sand between you and your neighbor. Home to Kelly Slater a eight-time world champion who is quoted as being the most successful professional surfer in the history of the sport-Cocoa Beach is a surfers paradise. As a graduate of Cocoa Beach High School I can honestly say I know the area from the past to the present. My dad worked at Kennedy Space Center and I grew up as what is affectionately called a "Space Center Brat". Had I known that I was getting a front row view of the history of the space program I may have appreciated it more. The space shuttle program is still a large part of this area and will continue to be with the recent government contract for the next generation of space travel. The area has changed over the past 10 years with Kennedy Space Center no longer being the only attraction in town. The area has seen a growth in housing, especially condominiums, hotels and a booming cruise industry. Nearby Port Canaveral has brought attention to the entire area with Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, the Queen Elizabeth II and Disney making people aware of what was always one of Florida's best kept secrets. The good news as far as real estate goes is the overall housing values enjoyed a good appreciation over the past couple of years like the rest of the United States but the price of real estate is still one of the lowest beachside values in the State of Florida.
